Une Journee' Romantique Class Description:

In this workshop you'll be making a beautiful harmonica envelope/tag album using a variety of lovely Prima goodies. You will create your own colored and stamped masking tape which will be used for the binding. Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist, Glaze & Glam add color to this romantique mini book!

"For the Love of Masking" Class Description:

In this workshop you will create an art journal style mini book using a different masking technique on every page. Take your masks to a higher level. Learn how to use them with spray paints, gesso, distress inks and more and be amazed by the way masks can be used. The variety of Tattered Angels products and inks I will bring to this class will enable you to create a mini book in your own favorite colors.

I went to Ingvild Bolme's Prima reveal today!

Hi everyone, Lisa here, I got a wonderful preview of all the new Prima goodies today. Ingvild Bolme must have an engineering degree because she has designed the "ninja" of all scrapbook tools. Wow, I was blown away by her distress tool, I swear that thing does everything but bake a cake! The distress tool made sanding, edging, folding, scrapping and scratching a dream and it's all in one tool. Here's some close up of her demoing the techniques for us.

Check out this gorgeous box all our Prima goodies came in. So sad we only got to borrow the tools, but don't worry our order for the store should be on it's way soon!

We are so excited to have Stayce DeWid come teach for us! Stayce is a fun-loving Huntington Beach, California native. She lives there with her husband Jimmy and five children. She also has an adorable 15 month old granddaughter that she absolutely cherishes!
Stayce has been scrapbooking for ten years and has always dabbled in some sort of crafting her entire life. She loves to include sparkle, glimmer, flowers and photography in almost all her projects!
Stayce designed for Creative Imaginations for five years doing show boards, displays, catalogs, design team and education. Currently she is an endorsed educator for Tattered Angels, Helmar and Prima as well as several scrapbook stores.
You can see Stayce on various live broadcasts such as "Live with Prima" and Live Helmar classes. She has been published in Memory Makers, Scrapbooking and Beyond and Gift Maker magazine.

Rain, rain go away!! I love a good rain storm but Sunday was crazy! Even at the store we had a rain challenge. Maura's Musings

Hi, all. Just wanted to mention the Journal class I'll be teaching on Thursday March 31 and Saturday April 2nd. Keeping a journal is really "in" these days, and this one would be perfect for you, with the beautiful "For the Record" papers we're using in shades of red, cream, green & black, with a few touches of yellow and pale blue thrown in for good measure. Come on in to the store and see the sample, then sign up for the class -- bring a friend, too, and share the fun! This journal can be used for your deepest thoughts, your hopes and dreams, or something as mundane as your to-do lists --- that's up to you, because it will be all your own.

I'm just finishing up my cards for the card class I'll be teaching with Beth in April. I've seen Beth's creations, and they're terrific, as always. I think this is going to be a great class, and you'll walk away with several cards in-hand and ready to send. The cards will be up in the store for you to see next week.

Hello Everyone,

I have so much to share with you! Some is about new changes to the store and some is a bit of venting about the scrapbook industry - all of it good and juicy so grab a cup of tea and join me!

New Website and Online Store

First, last week we launched our new website! We can still be found online at http://www.treasuredmemoriesca.com/ with a new look and we are also now selling online. Our Treasured Memories (TM) Online Store is currently live. We've started out small and are adding more products weekly. We don't want to compete with the huge online stores out there, we just want to stay our quirky unique selves and at the same time broaden our horizons. It is a way for us to continue in business in the depths of a weakened economy of which we've all endured the past couple of years.

Economic Woes

This economy has not been kind to many types of businesses, not just scrapbooking or crafting. To be completely honest, I am tired of seeing my friends scrapbook stores close. I miss them and our camaraderie so much. I miss working together, talking about our businesses and just sharing our feelings as we can only relate to each other about what it takes to run this type of business. Though I am thankful to have the SoCal Group (SCSRA) to talk about some of these issues, I felt this more poignantly in January at the CHA Show. I was able to visit with some old friends, which was awesome, (a shout out to my Jill and Vera) but in general the show was just well... different. There was "no buzz". It was the least attended show I have experienced in the past 10 years. Official numbers just released by CHA reports that CHA Show attendance was down 21% from last year.

The Honest Truth

For the first time in years, I feel as though independent scrapbook retail stores could be on their way to being a thing of the past. Maybe not right now, but within the next three to five years, not all of them of course, but as leases are up, many stores are closing regardless of how long they've been in business.

No one really wants to talk about this, but it is happening - and at an alarming rate. Customers will still be able to buy at Michaels, Jo-Ann's and online as the first two have enormous purchasing power and the online stores don't have the overhead. The real danger here, that I don't think people realize, is that the manufacturers are in danger. Can the manufacturers survive with a majority of their business being big box and online companies only, as well as some Expo's thrown in around the country? Manufacturers are going to need to operate smartly in order to thrive in this industry.

I know this is not a pleasant subject for many of us. Believe me, it is painful to talk about, but I have always been very honest with all of you. There is no more pretending that scrapbook stores are doing okay, because most of them are just surviving.

Family, Friends and a Good Roof

I want you all to know and understand clearly that I am not complaining about how things are; I am just pointing out what is happening in this industry. Also, all of this needs to be put into perspective in the scope of life. I've whitnessed friends and customers lose their homes and watched dear, dear customers fight the great fight of cancer and thankfully in most cases (sadly not all) win.As long as we have family, health and a good roof over our heads, we will all be okay.

Most importantly I am NOT closing, nor do I plan to in the near future. Like many store owners I have put my heart and soul into this business and I'm working daily to keep my business growing. I am blessed with awesome employees and teachers who are amazingly loyal which I appreciate and respect so much.

So, I've laid it on the table, the econmy is still sluggish, scrapbook retailers are struggling and manufacturers are feeling the pinch as well. What are we to do? We work smarter and innovate whenever possible of course!

Staying Up-to-Date with the TM Blog

We started the TM Blog years ago and we weren't consistent with posting new entries. We've recommitted to our blog and with Lisa and the teachers taking turns writing several times a week, there will be plenty to share. The TM Blog is also where we will be posting new product arrivals, class highlights, store information and upcoming sales. Scrapbooking Retreats

Next Thursday, I am off to Roughly Manor in Twenty-Nine Palms to play hostess for another wonderful weekend of scrapbooking and crafting. This is our second weekend retreat and once again we have a full house! I am really in need of a scrapbook get-away. I always come back so refreshed and it's actually kind-of funny that we get to take a break from all of our daily duties and kids etc., yet we go away and scrap about our families and children all weekend and love every minute of it! These weekend retreats have been well received so we are going to keep offering them! We are accepting enrollments for our retreat the weekend of November 19th. I expect it to fill quickly, so register today!

Classes - Here to Stay

I've heard mention that some stores are dropping their classes because they are too much work. I believe providing a place for women to go to create and be with others is extremely important so we will continue to offer classes as well as bring in guest teachers every few months. For Spring there are some great classes with Beth, Carol, Maura and Molly, check the Classes section on the website for dates and class details. I am so excited to announce that Lisa is returning to teach in April! She had major surgery in January and I am so happy to report that she is getting stronger everyday and can't wait to get back to teaching. We have really missed her.

Guest Teachers

This Spring we have TWO guest teachers coming to the store! First is Stacye DeWid who represents Tattered Angels and Prima, she will be teaching on April 16. We are so excited to have her at TM and thank you to Patty Lechuga for recommending Stacye!

Also, back by popular demand (yes we heard you!) - guest teacher Suzy West is returning to Treasured Memories on May 21!! Class details for Suzy are still being finalized so call the store if you want to be notified when all of the details have been worked out.

Scrapbook Saturdays

Being in business for over 13 years means we've done hundreds of Midnight Madness Friday night crops, we had some requests to offer a Saturday crop. We're listening, and I'd like to introduce Denise Coulter, who is going to be hosting our Saturday Crops! She is a design team member for Crafter's Companion and a talent in her own right! Come join her for eight hours of cropping and crafting. If you just need a little kick-start or have questions about a particular project, or just want to escape and craft for a bit, this is the perfect event for you. Our first Saturday Crop is April 2 from 3-11pm.

Customer Cards

Treasured Memories has offered a Customer Loyalty Card since the day we opened and we continue to do so today. We believe in rewarding those who are frequent shoppers and this is one of the ways for us to say thank you!

We've been working behind the scenes to bring a more up-to-date look to our site but more importantly we are excited to announce our Online Store! Yes, after 14 years TM is finally selling online! We know we can't compete with the large scrapbook sites, nor will we try. We want to be unique and continue to make our own name. Our goal is to offer products in easy to order collections and kits as well as one-of-a-kind items created by our artistic team. We plan to add new product weekly so make sure you check the site often, follow us on Twitter or befriend us on Facebook to know the latest products that are for sale.

While we've tested the online store for the past two weeks, we are still treating this as our online store BETA version. We need you to be our testers. Please check out our new store, browse the categories and order some items! Currently, we are offering InStore Pickup and Flat Rate shipping via USPS. We have six categories for our online store. They include:

Manufacturer Kits - These are kits designed and produced by the manufacturer. A typical kit would include nine or more 12x12 double-sided papers along with stickers and embellishments to complete the kit.
Treasured Memories (TM) Inspiration Kits are designed by TM's Artistic Team. These kits are created for the crafter who loves the boutique manufacturers but isn't quite sure how to pull it all together. This is not a layout kit but a collection that is a completely coordinated by our team. The kits are loaded with pattern papers, embellishments, ribbons and all of the goodies you need to create some beautiful projects. This is TM's version of a Kit Club without having to join a club.
Treasured Memories (TM) Kits include both layout and card kits created especially for our customers. Our TM Design Team has pulled some of their favorite papers and embellishments to create a double-page layout or set of cards. The kit contents will vary depending on the design and may include 2-6 double-side papers, cardstock, ribbon and/or embellishments. A full-color image of the finished kit will be included along with instructions when necessary.
Treasured Memories (TM) Class Kits are past classes taught by our awesome teachers! These kits include all product included in the class, color photos and instructions. These kits will range from beginner to advanced in technique and design.
Cardstock Collections – Exclusive collections of cardstocks that coordinate beautifully with our online kits help take the guess work out of coordinating colors.
Treasured Memories (TM) Designer Crafts -Our design team, whether they come from a fine art background, interior design or are just naturally creative, will be contributing to this category. These items will be one-of-a-kind and offered in limited quantities. Items included in this category could be for home decor, headbands, canvas projects, mini-albums or a one-of-a-kind item limited only by the designer's imagination. These creatively designed items are not kits, but original creations available for purchase.

Two is Too Much

Summer is upon us and the heat has finally arrived! In June I watched, my oldest daughter, Alexa, graduate from Newbury Park High School. Do you remember the albums I was working on for her graduation party? Well... I finished! Thanks to help from Kelly-Anne, Melissa and Katie who put the final pages together for me and helped me create 25 little party favor boxes using the Cricut in the store. The party was amazing and I'm so proud of Alexa! It still shocks me to think I have a daughter going to college in the fall! But, I'm not going to dwell on that right now, I just want to enjoy the family cruise we're taking at the end of July and quitting my job!

Two is Too Much

That's right, after a year and half, I can no longer work two jobs, one of them being a retail business and the other as a sub-acute dietitian. My heart and soul are committed to Treasured Memories so I have resigned from my dietitian position. I finished up last week and to say that I am relieved is an understatement. With the economy slipping and scrapbook retail dropping dramatically, it was necessary for me to work to pull the store through the difficult times. Don't get me wrong, the scrapbook industry is still struggling but I believe in the power of this hobby to help others, change lives and provide a creative outlet.

I've missed being in the store and it certainly has been a challenge trying to get everything done. I am very excited to start fresh and have the energy to put into the store that it deserves. In the coming months look for a TM Customer Survey as well as a restructuring of events and services that we provide at Treasured Memories. My goal is to make Treasured Memories your FIRST stop when it comes to scrapbook supplies, classes and crops so we will be reassessing our priorities as well as what customers want and need in the way of products and services.

Kids + Scrapbooking = Fun and Free Time!

Our Kid's Class Series is going great! Beth and Kelly-Anne have been doing an awesome job with the kids. These young artists have no rules or hang-ups about their creative process - it's refreshing to watch each of them start with the same base materials and leave with a project that is unique to their style. There are two classes remaining in our series, "Stuck on You" Magnetic Board on July 21 & 25 and "Remembering Summer" Album & Tin on July 29 & August 1. If your kids are interested and you'd like a few hours of free time call the store and book a class or two.

We are also introducing our newest event, "Junior Midnight Madness" that will take place one Friday night per month. We are kick starting this fun night on Friday, July 30th from 5-9pm. Lisa Florence and her daughter, Bianca (age 11), will be hosting this event in which your kids (ages 8-14) can come and scrapbook, learn new techniques, meet new friends and be creative! While the kids are scrapping, you can escape and go to dinner or just have some likely needed down time.

We Didn't Forget the Mom's!

Don't worry, we haven't forgotten the Mom's in our community! Lisa Florence will also be hosting a "Girls Night Out (GNO) Crop. The first one will be Friday, September 24th from 6pm-Midnight. This is a step up from our low-key Midnight Madness crop. Lisa plans to kick-start the evening with a faux cocktail (how fun is that)! This is sure to be a great evening out as Lisa is fun, amazingly talented and is so ready to share her love and enthusiasm for this wonderful hobby. Card makers, that includes you too, as her techniques go across the board for all crafters! You can meet Lisa by attending her first TM class titled "Techniques with Lisa" which is this Wednesday, July 21st from 7-9:30pm, it's filling up fast so if you were thinking about taking it call today!

TM Turns 13!!

I am so excited for June to arrive! We will be celebrating our 13-year anniversary here at TM on June 17th! How can that be possible??? So many years, so many friends, so many memories!. We are grateful to still be open. Never in my wildest dreams when we opened all those years ago did I think TM would even be around after five or 10 years, let alone 13!!

TM has always been an important part of my life and as I write this newsletter and reflect back, I have come to the conclusion that TM has become a way for me to serve our community. I still love coming to work!This may sound strange, but sometimes when I come into the store early before we open and look around, it hits me that I actually own a small business.

Through the years, we have been in three locations (this one being my favorite), have taught hundreds of classes and purchased thousands of scrapbook products. We have traveled to many scrapbook shows, and this year sold product at our first consumer show. We have counted every single item in the store every December for inventory and had fun doing it! We have hosted special events such as bus tours, a garage sale, a hotel scrapbook weekend, the annual Shop Hop, summer kids camps to name a few and we continue to try to come up with different events to offer.

Watching Our Customers Grow!

Just as we've grown over the years, so have our customers! So many were pregnant when we first met them, now those children are graduating from middle school. Many more had young children who are now off to college just as my oldest is this fall. Again, where did the time go? At my daughter's graduation party this June, I will be displaying her two school year albums that include Kindergarten through her Senior year as well as an album showcasing all of her years and hard work playing soccer. I think her friends will get a kick out of seeing her from a young age until her Senior Prom just last week.

I know that customers come and go and that through the years we were unable to please everyone as we strive for the best possible customer experience possible. You are what drives our business and has made TM what it is today. We have always cared about our customers and their needs very much. I hope to be able to service you for many more years to come.

"It's Only 60 Cents..."

"It's only a 60 cent piece of paper."

I think that is the rationale some give themselves when taking product from our store without paying for it.

Many of you will be surprised to learn that Treasured Memories has an increasing theft problem. "No!", you say? "Crafters don't steal!" but alas they do. With our doors open for almost 13 years, we've always had some theft, however, we've recently reached a new pinnacle.

In the past few weeks we've had two fully decorated sample albums stolen. One album had been secured with ribbon and the thief cut it off with scissors! We've learned that it's difficult to sell album kits without a sample. With these items costing $20-$26 that is a loss in itself not to mention that the incompleted album kits just sit on the store shelf, which is additional lost revenue.

We've also noticed that the thieves are getting even more sneaky. This past week, a package of Cricut blades were stolen - but the packaging was left in tact on the display wall. We've since stapled all of the existing Cricut blade packages closed to avoid this happening again. We've also notified Provo Craft to inform them of the packaging defect in hopes that it will be changed in the future.

These incedences are just some of the items that have been taken; I often think late at night about what else has been taken that I don't know about. Theft is lost revenue. Lost revenue means that Treasured Memories is not able to follow through on plans we have for the store.

I hope you understand how much TM means to me. I've worked so hard for this store and for many years without compensation. Beginning March 1st, I've cut back my dietitian hours as I can no longer work two full-time jobs and take care of my family. It doesn't work and it wasn't healthy for me, my family or my business. I therefore don't have that extra income to supplement the store anymore. I'm going by faith that Treasured Memories is meant to be here for our community. I love what TM offers its customers and believe in what we do. With so many scrapbook stores closing, I want to be the one that remains open!

The reason I've shared this dirty little topic is that I need to ask you, my loyal customers, to take note and keep your eyes open when shopping in the store. If you happen to notice any suspicious behavior, please inform a staff member. I know that is a strange request and above and beyond a normal customer's shopping experience, but nonetheless I must ask for your help. The problem is too large for us alone. One 60 cent piece of paper, one 15 cent button, a 75 cent yard of ribbon adds up to Treasured Memories keeping its doors open.

A Note from Christine:

Happy New Year!! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and some time off to spend with family. My tummy is ready to take a break from all of the holiday goodies and my body is screaming to get back to my Tuesday morning hikes with Molly.

To be perfectly honest, I look forward to the New Year for Treasured Memories with a mixture of excitement and nervous anticipation. The excitement comes from new things to come, being adventurous and risking new avenues to keep the business going.

The nervous anticipation comes from knowing that five scrapbook stores closed around me last year, which was sad and scary, and that our economy has a long way to go in terms of recovery.

January is always the time that I reevaluate what we offer at TM and try to brain storm new ways to provide the best retail experience for you, our loyal customers. I am branching out and trying something new!!

TM Exhibiting at CHA Consumer SuperShow
Every January you hear me talk about attending CHA in Anaheim and all the new product that manufacturers introduce. This year, two-days BEFORE the CHA Trade Show portion there will be a CHA Consumer SuperShow and Treasured Memories is exhibiting!

It takes place Friday, January 22^nd Noon-8pm and Saturday, January 23^rd,10am-6pm. We have a double booth with Make-n-Takes, drawings, prizes, guest artist appearances and more!

The Consumer SuperShow is CHA's version of an Expo, the only difference is that ALL crafts are being represented and we're excited about the opportunity to share scrapbooking with other crafters. I realize the Orange County Expo has been changed to the weekend before the Consumer SuperShow, but I encourage all of you to attend the Consumer SuperShow. It will be new and different and I am so excited about exhibiting that I cannot sleep at night!

What's In Our Booth?

One of the unique features of the Consumer SuperShow is that manufacturers are not permitted to sell directly to consumers. Treasured Memories has partnered with over a dozen GREAT manufacturers and are honored to be selling their products in various forms including open stock, collection packs, two-page layout kits and unique project kits.

Stacy Julian from Big Picture Scrapbooking

We are thrilled to announce that Stacy Julian will be at our booth Saturday, January 23rd, 11am-Noon to sign autographs and talk about her Finish Line Scrapbooking class that she's teaching at the CHA SuperShow. Stacy will also share her philosophy and approach to guilt-free scrapbooking.

We are also thrilled to welcome Marah Johnson from Creative Imaginations to our booth on Friday and Saturday. Marah is currently in the process of developing a Make-n-Take just for us that she will teach at the SuperShow! On a side note, Marah will is teaching two classes at Treasured Memories on Saturday, February 6th, come meet her, take her class(es) and then you'll be best friends by CHA!

Madison Parker from Fancy Pants

Madison Parker comes to us from Fancy Pants Designs and will be teaching a great Make-n-Take featuring Fancy Pants product on Friday. Madison is a hoot and will be very fun to have in the booth!

TM + CHA SuperShow + Anaheim = BUS TOUR!!

To add to the fun, we have hired a bus to take us to Anaheim! The bus departs TM on Saturday, January 23rd at 8am to arrive by opening time of 10am. Spend the day shopping, learning, creating and then enjoy a relaxing bus ride home. Marlene will be the bus Hostess (with the mostest) while you play Scrapbook Bingo and a few other games. The price of the bus is $35 which covers our costs. We'll provide water and snacks on the bus and food will be available to purchase at the Convention Center.

March Newsletter

The past month has been a roller coaster of emotions. From the loss of a wonderful person and customer to cancer, learning that my friends' scrapbook store is closing, discovering new store possibilities at PMA and life changes for members of my staff I have had a busy month.

Farewell to Friends
First, and most importantly, Scrapbook Safari in Woodland Hills will be closing its doors at the end of the month. I am deeply saddened by this and frankly, it hit really close to home.

Many of you have shopped, cropped and taken classes at Safari. I've known the owners, Jill and Vera, for over 10 years. We have attended annual scrapbook trade shows together, shared many a dinner where we'd discuss what each of us liked at the show and talked about the new trends we'd seen in scrapbooking. We've been sounding boards for each other in times of need and have always tried to help each other with our businesses. We have shared many laughs together and more recently many tears. When Jill and Vera first opened, all those years ago, countless people would ask me "Wow, you talk to each other? Aren't they your competition?" And I would always answer, "No, we are great friends."

I have always believed that it is smarter to work together to make scrapbook retailers stronger than to pit stores against each other. Anyone who owns a retail business, or any business, knows how much heart and soul must be put in to survive, particularly in our current economy. It breaks my heart knowing that Jill and Vera's journey has come to an end. We still have our friendship, which I am so grateful for and I look forward to getting together in the future to scrapbook and tell tales of "the good 'ol days." Their silver lining is that each will be able to spend more time with their families - in the end, that is most important in life. Who knows, maybe they'll get to scrapbook more often - now, that will make me jealous for sure!

Even during this difficult time for Jill, Vera and everyone at Scrapbook Safari, they are thinking of Treasured Memories by promoting TM with flyers and encouraging their customers and teachers to come our way. In the past few weeks, we've welcomed many Safari customers who say they are literally in shock and mourning the loss of their special scrapbook haven. That is a true testament to Safari's character and they can close their doors knowing that they made such an impact on people's lives. I may have lost my trade show buddies, but they still remain my personal friends, who I know I can continue to call and count on in the challenging times ahead. Thank you Jill and Vera - I wish you the best in your next adventures!

Changes in the Classroom
At TM, we will be saying goodbye to Laura Sullivan as a teacher and full-time staff member beginning April 1st. Laura has worked for TM for seven years as both a popular teacher as well as managing TM's behind-the-scenes operations.We are going to miss seeing her day-to-day and her attention to detail. Fortunately, she is teaching one final class in May and has agreed to work a Saturday or Sunday store shift now and then, so it's not a final farewell.

Beginning in May, we welcome two of Scrapbook Safari's teachers to the Treasured Memories' teaching staff. We are happy to have Rebekah and Kerry join our team. The closing of Safari has been difficult on them and we appreciate that they want to continue doing what they love, which is teaching classes. They both come with a loyal following of students who've enjoyed their amazing work. You will see for yourself when their May classes are posted on April 1st. As always, you can still expect terrific classes from our on-goining teaching staff of Beth, Christy and Molly, so check our class schedule online or better yet, come in to see the class samples in person.

Treasured Memories' Future
Finally, I'd like to talk a bit about Treasured Memories' future. First, I want to assure you that Treasured Memories is not going out of business. I am still working as a dietitian to infuse what money I earn into the store in order to keep it going during this economic slump. The downside to this is that I'm not in the store quite as much as I used to be. I am grateful to my amazing staff for stepping up to the plate and I can't thank them enough for their continued support. This is a tough time for ALL companies and it just forces us all to work smarter.

One of the ways TM is working smarter is by looking at the future of scrapbooking and the photo industry in general. Molly and I attended the Photo Marketing Association (PMA) Show in Las Vegas two weeks ago. We attended several seminars that focused on ways to help our business grow. We saw some time-saving products that we realized we need to incorporate into the store in order for us to be competitive in the digital era. We left with our heads filled with fabulous ideas and most importantly, we left with a vision of what Treasured Memories can and will become in the future. There will be more to come on these wonderful opportunities in the weeks and months ahead!

On a final note, I believe that scrapbooking is NOT a dying industry. As people go through life they will always want to capture memories and preserve them for future generations. Thank you for all of your support for the last 12 years - we wouldn't be here without you and we look forward to many more years of inspiring you one memory at a time.

February News Letter

We got back from the CHA (Craft & Hobby Association) show last Tuesday. While walking the huge convention halls is tiring, it's always great to hang out with my employees and talk about our new finds. Even though we were just in Anaheim, it seems like we are far, far away from home.

The CHA show had a different vibe this year. It was definitely less busy; we had plenty of room to move around in the booths and view the new products. There were less manufacturers and we missed, Scenic Route and October Afternoon who both pulled out of the show at the last minute. On Tuesday, Roni and I were turning in some last orders and honestly it seemed so quiet it was weird - and the show didn't end until Wednesday!

All around me I could hear conversations about the state of the economy - it was definitely on everyone's minds. "Are people hurting?" Absolutely. "Is it going to be good in the long run for the U.S.?" Absolutely. Things were getting out of control on such a broad scale in so many areas of our economy and now we need to reel it in and take care of business and be smart. "Is Treasured Memories affected like so many other retailers?" Of course, but we are making the necessary everyday changes that are needed to stay in business. That included buying smarter at CHA and sticking to a smaller budget so that we will still be around in 2010.

The current economy was a huge part of the show and I always learn from industry businesses and I try to evolve and make changes as necessary. Now, enough business talk - let's get on to the fun stuff!

Our Favorite CHA Booth

With over 320 scrapbook manufacturers at the show you would think that we would have difficulty choosing a favorite but we were all unanimous... Graphic 45! By far, the Graphic 45 booth was amazing, beautiful, classy, fun, and the buzz of the show!

It was just the unbelievable way their booth was displayed, and their three product lines were awesome. You may think of Graphic 45 as a heritage company and yes, they tend to have a lot of heritage, but look closer at the back of many of their papers - they can be used for anything and they all coordinate so beautifully!! We bought all three lines. Communique & Fashionista are available late February and Transatlantique is available in March.

Our second favorite was a new company to the USA we found in the "New Product Section" of the convention. ScrapFX has made a name for themselves in Australia. They specialize in laser cutting chipboard shapes and words. Their shapes are very detailed and look terrific! These photos don't do them justice. We ordered flowers, animals, music notes, dinosaurs, a beautiful gate, keys, clock hands, flourishes, alphabets, some great words and more! They can be painted, inked, or covered with paper. So it is November, my favorite month of the year! I just love Thanksgiving and the fact that it's the least commercial holiday of the year! I love that it is about family, being thankful and of course about food, something I have a crazy fascination about! What could make for a better day? Every year at this time I feel so blessed and this year is no exception. I am so thankful for:
My family, friends & our good health. Both my parents and my husband's parents live close by and are amazing. I have wonderful friends who I adore and really enjoy spending time with.
Treasured Memories (TM) - I guess you could say that beyond my family, TM is the second love of my life!
My employees, teachers & customers. What would I do without you all??????????? I honestly don't know. My life would seem so less important, my path wouldn't seem as clear if it wasn't for the store and each of you. (I don't mean to be sappy, but this is true.)

Are you ready to pull up your sleeves and get painting and crafting? Create a wooden, house-shaped shadow box that is all decked out for Christmas. There are lights (non-electrical) on the rooftop, garland, bells, ornaments, and plenty of 3-D decorations to spruce up the entire house. The house will be painted and we will use Stickles to decorate the tree. Everything is included except photos and the gold stickles (available for purchase at the store). Don't forget your tools and adhesives listed in the supply section, and feel free to bring 8-10 photos of your holiday activities.

Is Scrapbooking Recession Proof?

Not surprising, the answer is no.

Last week we had the $700 billion Federal bailout take place. Prior to that, Bank of America took over Countrywide and now Citigroup Inc. is planning on purchasing the Wachovia banks. These are just two of numerous takeovers that have occurred in the business world of late. The same types of company mergers have occurred in the scrapbook industry.

Scrapbook Manufacturer Mergers

Over a year ago, Fiskars purchased Heidi Grace, Cloud Nine and L'il Davis. Then two of the largest scrapbook companies - EK Success and K & Company were acquired by Wilton, Inc. - yes, the cake decorating company! I am looking at the positive, at least it is a company involved with crafts! We are still adjusting to new reps, warehouses and changes in policy. Autumn Leaves has just announced that it will now sell only to "big box" stores and will no longer sell to the small independent scrapbook stores. Junkitz went out of business altogether. As I write this, I've just heard of three big scrapbook companies in Utah that are going out of business. To compound the problem, scrapbook stores are closing in record numbers. This IS a scary time for the scrapbook industry!!

One thing I've heard from customers over the past six months is that scrapbooking, card making or doing any other craft decreases the stress in their life and gives them an "escape" or is their "therapy". I know this has always been an important part of why we scrapbook, but I think people are just verbalizing it more now.

You do not have to give up your creative outlet in these difficult times, in fact, it would be healthier not to. I have to remind myself of this as well! I understand that people are hurting financially which affects people's emotions and stress levels. As the Today Show discussed yesterday, the events of today's world affects us women more because we are the nucleus of the family and we tend to take on EVERYTHING. Therefore I am encouraging you (and me!) to not give up on a hobby that makes you happy - we as women need an outlet too!

Inexpensive Scrapbooking Ideas

Scrapbooking or crafting in general does NOT have to be expensive. Below are some ways to save money, which will enable you to still engage in your favorite hobby despite feeling the money pinch.

Choose embellishments to compliment the product you already have in your scrapbook stash.
Use your punches. These are great for pages, projects and cards - they can be used over and over. EK Success has the best punches in terms of ease of use and styles.
Come crop at the store during the week! It's free during day-time use and you'll only buy what you need for the page/project you are working on!
Bring a Scrapbook Shopping List to find the specific items or themes you are looking for, it will keep you focused on what you really need.
Bring your photos and use our crop room to spread out your photos while you match paper & embellishments, thus only buying what you really need.
Use our Cricut Die-Cut Center to make titles instead of purchasing alphabet letters. It's just 50 cents a cut!
Make your holiday cards this season instead of purchasing ready-made cards, which can be a savings of $1.00 a card!
Create and print photo collages using the TM Digi Center. Create a multi-photo 8½ x11 for only $3!

Christine's Big Decision

As people start to adjust to this new economic world, I too am making a change. Starting shortly, I will begin working part-time as a Registered Dietitian.

Don't worry, I'm not deserting Treasured Memories - it is too near and dear to my heart, but with the economy tanking I need to do whatever it takes to keep the store going. I will still be working at the store Monday, Wednesday and Fridays so stop in and say hello, come scrapbook for a few hours and escape the stresses of life.

I am going to leave you with a poem that Molly - my website guru and TM teacher - wrote in the middle of the night last month. I think it is fitting for the times we are in.

For the past few weeks we have been so busy helping high school students
from both Westlake & Oaks Christian complete scrapbooks that have been
assigned as school work. Most of these kids have no scrapbook experience.
They've walked in saying, "I have a scrapbook due on Friday. Please help!"
Now we all know that it takes more than five days to make a scrapbook,
right? I have been so proud watching my staff quickly teach them the basics
and get them going on their scrapbooks. When I step back and look, I realize
that helping others is one of the things that we do best at TM. We stress
customer service above all else and it's great to see that we rise to the
occasion when given the opportunity!
With our 11-year anniversary approaching (June 17th to be exact), I am once
again reminded how time flies. I feel so truly blessed to still have the
store after 11 years and three locations! Every new year forces me to
reflect on how the industry has changed and how the store has evolved over
time. I believe one of the reasons that we are still around is that we are
always trying new ways to enhance the scrapbook experience for our
customers. Our latest project, the TM DigiCenter, will open this month. It
will offer scanning, custom-size photo printing, Photoshop Elements, the
Cricut Design Studio & more. This is just one of the many new changes that
we are making to the store. I hope you stop by and try some of the great
digital features over the summer. Our helpful staff will be happy to assist
you.

Have you ever stopped to think about what you would do without scrapbooking in your life? Even though we are celebrating our 11th anniversary next month, a different form of scrapbooking has been crafted in households for over 50 years.

My mom is 82 years old and has shown me albums she made of our family when she was younger. She has taught me the importance of recording life's special moments. How we scrapbook is different now, as all things typically evolve in life. But why we scrapbook still remains the same and is the core of why we love this hobby. Documenting our family histories can be done in so many different methods; from a traditional 12x12 album, a mini book, an art decor project that hangs in the family room to digital layouts & projects - they are all wonderful ways of preserving what's important in our lives.

I'm sure we all go through dry spells with scrapbooking. I know I have. I just wish I had more time in my life to devote to my hobby. I'm looking forward to our guest speaker, Stacy Julian, on Friday, June 6th as I think her lecture will really hit home with me and motivate me to find more time to scrapbook. She will be speaking about how scrapbooking can bring clarity and balance to our everyday lives. Don't we all need clarity and balance brought to our crazy lives???? More power to you if you don't, but I will be the first here to admit that I do! We still have a few spots a available, call the store if you're interested in participating in this terrific event.

On a sad note, I just wanted to acknowledge the unfortunate passing of Mike Lacey, an incredible man who has represented many great scrapbook lines for the store for the past 8 or more years. He died this week of lung cancer.

About eight years ago, when I first learned I was losing my "woman" rep at EK Success, and had to start ordering scrapbook supplies from a "man", I was not happy! I look back now and laugh, as he has been the most wonderful rep to me. He actually became more than that - we became great friends and he was like a second father to me. My employees and I will miss him dearly. I am glad he is at peace and I wish his wife Charlene and family the best. We will miss you as well.

Hello,
First of all, an apology for any confustion caused by the last email sent with
the subject as "???" We simply forgot to put the subject in before sending the
mass email! Oh well!

We are really busy getting ready for our "Escape" scrapbook weekend which starts
a week from Friday at the Renaissance Hotel in Agoura. We have a GREAT group of
women coming and I am really excited for the entire weekend.

We finally received Basic Grey in this past Monday. I actually like it much
better than when I saw it at the show. Strange. It is already doing very
well. I am thrilled that I finally found a great new 81/2 x 11 laser paper
company which carries tons of invitational paper to put through the computer.
We re-worked that entire back wall and it looks great!! There are themes we
were missing and finally new themes that people have been using for years.

April Newsletter

Spring is here! Okay, I just have to admit that I am in a strange mood today. Maybe since it's Spring Break and I am sitting here writing my newsletter before I take my kids out to do something fun. My middle daughter is in Washington DC on a whirlwind 5-day school field trip. I know she's taking tons of photos and will be scrapbooking her trip once she returns. It has definitely been a trip she'll always remember. Her traveling has inspired me to work on my 8x8 album from my trip to New York City in 2006.

So much has changed since I took that trip. Life is good right now, but frankly I am troubled by what's happening in the world. The war, violence, high gas & food prices, many people are really struggling just to make ends meet. I feel for them in our town as well as people around the country. Sometimes it makes me want to hide in my scrapbook room and work on my projects so I can escape everything!

Enough depressing talk! In all honesty, I think scrapbooking is an amazing artistic outlet, because not only are we documenting important events in our lives, but also, it truly is therapeutic in that it allows us to reflect on our lives and re-visit the good and maybe not so good times.

One of the things I love about having the store is watching people as they work on their scrapbooks. Last weekend we had a group of nine women cropping for one of their birthdays, and it was so exciting for me to see how much fun they were having together, enjoying each others company and working on their respective projects. It is important for us women to engage in these types of activities. It gives us "our" escape, whether it is just getting a few hours away from the kids and talking to adults or being able to enjoy a hobby that we feel so passionate about.

After almost eleven years in this business, I feel so blessed that I still love what I do, and get so excited when all the new stuff comes in from the shows. I don't think that feeling will ever go away.

I know you're busy, but I encourage you to make time this month to scrapbook, make cards, gifts or do whatever is important to you. Like me, you may feel like you run around all week with your head cut off, but just spending a little time creating can take away all of those crazy hours. I had one of those weeks last week (are you surprised?!?). I felt blessed and rejunvenated when I spent part of Saturday night and Sunday at home working on my New York City trip album! I am still putting some finishing touches on the album but here's a peek at one of the layouts:

Kids Classes!

Hi all,
Today we offered two kids classes for Spring Break. They were a blast. Beth,
our instructor did a great job! The first project was a 4x4 acrylic album.
The kids learned how to work with acrylic, chipboard, paper, ribbon and
rub-ons. We used our Zutter machine to bind it and just like that they all had
an adorable album!

The second project was the K & Co. "Berry Sweet" Purse Kit. The kids also
enjoyed this project. We were turning moms and kids away today and they all
want more..... so...... we are now in the process of developing a variety of
summer projects as well as a week-long scrapbook camp! We were overwhelmed
by the positive response to these projects. We have started an interest list
for the summer projects, so call the store to get your kids names on and join
us for more fun! Boys projects will be available also.

The UPS guy just keeps coming! Today we received Cosmo Cricket - it is awesome!
Two completely different lines which are both beautiful. Sonburn also arrived
- gorgeous new baby collection and a very cool school collection. We will
update the actual new product section in detail tomorrow. Stay tuned!

New Product Update

Well, we got in our K & Company order from CHA today. As I said in my
newsletter, the Blue Awning Collection is so AMAZING!! We bought the entire
line - a lot of it arrived, however, some of it is backordered and will ship
soon. The employees and I just sat there and stared at it today. It really is
exquisite! We also received some of the K & Company "Berry" line. It is sooo
cute!

Tinkering Inks came in today. We bought all four new lines. It is very fun
paper and very different for us. Other arrivals include:
Paper Loft - Grandparents Line (Beautiful)
Dream Street - the two chipboard album sizes have sold so well in just two days
that we will be re-ordering tomorrow already.

There is more! Come visit us this Friday or Saturday for our sale and receive
20% off all regular product including the new!! Meet our teachers from
10am-12pm and see some of their latest classes. I love them. Many of them
actually will make wonderful Mother's Day gifts, so think ahead!

New Product Update

All of the My Mind's Eye product is up! The "29th Street" &" Wild Asparagus"
are awesome! We also got in the "Times Nouveau Collection" from Graphic 45.
It is really beautiful & some of it has a more heritage feel to it.

The New Product section is now updated completely, so you can view that for
specifics of everything we purchased at the show with expected arrival dates.
We are working on some really exciting things for the future of the store. All
I can say is "You rock Molly!" I am grateful to all of my employees for always
working so hard for me. I love you all!

Have you ever had to reach out on a limb to get something? That's how I felt at the last two trade shows. At PMA (Photo Marketing Association), I started to learn about digital scrapbooking and all that it entails. Seventy percent of scrapbookers own a digital camera & 80% of us scrapbookers use a computer! It makes sense that you would want to use your computer to scrapbook as well. The buzz word in our industry right now is "hybrid scrapbooking". That's a combination of traditional scrapbooking and digital scrapbooking. If you've ever created a title or journaling on a computer then you're a hybrid scrapbooker (don't you feel techie)! In the coming months we will be unveiling our latest project - DigiTM! A place to learn about digital software, create projects and organize digital photos so stay tuned!

At CHA (Craft & Hobby Association), I branched out and explored companies I haven't ordered from before. We made some bold decisions in regards to themes, colors & embellishments. I am so thrilled with our purchases and I know you will be too! Some of the products have already arrived and others are on their way. Our Product List will be updated with all the latest PMA & CHA purchases by Friday.

CHA was a good show this year. As I said in my blog, there wasn't one thing that I went crazy over. The stand out product was the new K & Co. "Blue Awning" line - it is truly gorgeous (and of course I bought it).

Speaking of blogs, I have gone high-tech (at least for me)! At first it seemed strange to write an entry, but now I am having fun with it. It's such a great way to give everyone a quick update inbetween newsletters and stay connected. It's just another way I am learning to branch out in life!

We had our first "TM Scrapbook Garage Sale" on Saturday. What a great event! We were completely full with no room to spare and the sellers had every inch stuffed with their items! There was so much to choose from it was unbelievable! Everyone seemed to do well, and I love that one of our participants, Donna Becker, donated all of the money she made to the "Leukemia & Lymphoma Society" in her daughter's name. Way to go Donna!

Our next event is the TM Scrapbook Escape Weekend at the Renaissance Hotel, April, 11 -13. For $225 you have a large scrapbook space to call home for the weekend, all meals and snacks, an exclusive 6x6 acrylic album class taught by Jessica Guthrie of Kits2Remember, Demo Camp and of course TONS of product giveways, drawings and prizes! The hotel is an extra fee but we have a terrific rate and if you need a roommate let us know, we have several scrappers who are looking to share a room.

For the past 10 years I have gone away to crop and it is the only time that I am amazingly productive. I also enjoy the time away with friends and a chance to rejuvenate. I cherish those weekends every year and with Scrapbook Escape I am trying to create this type of weekend for each of you. Even if you've never gone away to scrapbook before, I encourage you to branch out and try it. We are known for our "over-the-top" events and this one is sure to uphold our reputation!

We also are beginning to organize our fall Tour de Crop Bus Tour with Collective Journey (Redlands) and Scrappin' Good Times. (San Dimas) This will be our last bus tour. You know, I've come to realize in the past month that learning and experimenting with new things is fun (and a bit scary)! I encourage each of you to reach out on a limb and try something new with your scrapbooking this month. Operation Replenish - Poway

Roni and I left at 6am for Poway on Friday and it was worth getting up so early
and driving for 3 and half hours! Even with the pooring rain outside, there was
a line at the door of women waiting to receive free scrapbook supplies. It was
amazing to hear their stories. They have lost EVERYTHING! Can you even
imagine???? One lady I helped is living with her parents, with their three
children. Their parents are older and have been amazing taking everyone in.

The thing that struck me the most was their positive attitudes. I was humbled
and in tears half the day. They received everything to start over: stickers,
stamps, albums, adhesive, punches, tools, die-cuts, paper and even
organizational totes such as XXL's. They felt so thankful and a few mentioned
they were going to go home and start scrapbooking that day! The day was tiring
but amazing. A huge THANK YOU to the customers who donated supplies. Roni's
van was just about full - so thanks to all of you!!

Operation Replenish

I am off to Poway to help work the Operation Replenish event. It should be
amazing. From what I understand, it is an old Miller's Outpost store and one
of my reps said she doesn't think she has ever seen so many albums in her life
in one space.

I am excited to be able to help the women who lost their homes last fall in the
fires re-stock their scrapbooks supplies. We can never bring back their lost
albums and pictures, but this is a big step in helping them be able to
scrapbook again. I am bringing my camera so I will share later!

New Product!

came today. We received new beautiful papers in the following themes:

We're back from CHA/Fire donations/ Scrapbook Escape Questions

Hi everyone!
Well, as usual we had a great time at CHA! I just love to look at all the new
product and evaluate what direction this industry is going. I expected there
to be more information on digital scrapbooking. It was there, more than in the
past for sure. The Prima Flowers booth had good examples of hybrid
scrapbooking. There were a few booths which were educating and selling
strictly digital scrapbooking. I am still not sure how we will incorporate
digital scrapbooking into the store as of yet. More research to do!

At this show I didn't find one company that I just went crazy over, except K &
Company's "Blue Awing" line. It is truly stunning. We bought the entire line.
Most of the companies did a great job introducing new variations on themes we
needed for the store. I feel like we covered all areas to meet everyone's
taste. Anna Griffin came out with some beautiful lines again. My Mind's Eye
has a new "Wild Asparagus" Line that is also beautiful as well as "29 Street"
which is amazing. The talk of the show was that Basic Grey's release this year
wasn't as good as in the past. We still bought a lot of four out of the five
lines, but I will be curious to hear your feedback.

We really focused on ordering from some newer company's that we have not
purchased from in the past. We know what staples we need, but in addition we
ordered some lines that are a great new look for us that I know you will enjoy!

OPERATION REPENISH!
We started collecting donations yesterday for the fire victims in the Rancho
Bernardo/Poway area. Roni and I are going to go down on Friday (Feb. 22nd) to
deliver the donations and work the event. If you have any scrapbook items and
gently used tools to donate, we will need them by Wednesday. It is a great
cause and I am excited to participate.

SCRAPBOOK ESCAPE!
We have had a couple of questions about the price of the weekend escape not
including the hotel room. Most people are sharing the hotel room which makes
the room anywhere from $25 to $50 per night. (4 people or 2 people
respectively) I have been going on scrapbook weekends for 6-7 years now and
have never paid under $350.00 for the weekend. The one I attend now - "Garden
Spa Scrappin" in Arroyo Grande is wonderful and is currently $375.00. She
(Marguerite) is booked all year long.

The $225 also includes a guest teacher Friday night who is doing a 6x6 acrylic
album with all attendees. We are having a demo camp Saturday and giving away
TONS of prizes all weekend. As you can imagine this type of weekend is an
amazing amount of work/labor on our part and with the fee to the hotel, it is
impossible to lower the price. The attendees will be getting so much for their
money and I know they will have an incredible time.
